Problematic and Dated Feminism: A Fun Popcorn Movie Dressed up in Surface-Level Thoughts on Gender Relations
This movie does not provide the provocative commentary on female empowerment, feminism, or gender relations that Gerwig seems to think it does. Gerwig presents a one-note movie with surface-level attempts to be subversive in the domain of gender relations but fails to hit the mark.
TWO WEAKNESSES
1.) The narrative itself, while seeming simple, is rife with holes. I have seen the genre “magical realism” thrown around a bit, but I don’t think people understand that this traditionally literary genre does not operate as an answer to Barbie’s structural narrative problems nor does it take into account what “magical realism” actually is as a genre. Additionally, asking audiences to engage in suspension of disbelief also does not fix the narrative issue.2.) While I self-identify as a third- and fourth-wave feminist (taking some aspects from various feminist theories from both of those waves), the overall tongue-in-cheek message about empowering women in this film is incredibly dated and reductionist. Yes, the movie presents issues that are still very real for women, but I am shocked at the widespread notion that the Barbie movie is saying something new or provocative in the context of feminism because it’s not. It capitulates a one-size-fits-most idea of feminism, which does not reflect the reality of feminist theories or Women’s and Gender Studies. In this regard, the Barbie movie feels egregiously out of touch with feminism rather than the contrary. This is not helped by the movie’s treatment of the Kens, which ends up regressing into a VERY dated and problematic male versus female arc to the narrative, which is in no way what feminist theories postulate. It’s so egregious that I would say, to a degree, this movie dips unintentionally into misandry, which is concerning. There’s a difference between Barbie versus Ken and commentary on gender/sex relations.
