Born on July 4, 1925, in Santa Paula, California, Fleming grew up in the small town of West Hollywood. He attended Hollywood High School and later joined the United States Navy, serving as a communications officer during World War II.

After the war, Fleming studied at the Pasadena Playhouse, where he honed his acting skills. He began his career in the 1950s, appearing in a number of films and television shows, including The Conqueror (1956), Love Me Tender (1956), and The Big Circus (1959).

However, it was his role as Gil Favor in Rawhide that brought Fleming widespread recognition. The show, which aired from 1959 to 1966, followed the adventures of a group of cowboys driving a herd of cattle across the American West. Fleming’s character, Gil Favor, was the trail boss and leader of the group.

Tragically, Fleming’s life was cut short when he died during the filming of the movie High Jungle in Peru. On September 28, 1966, while filming a scene in which his character was supposed to swim across a river, Fleming’s canoe overturned, and he was swept away by the current. His body was later recovered downstream. Fleming was only 41 years old at the time of his death.

Eric Fleming is remembered as a talented actor and a beloved figure in the entertainment industry. His work on Rawhide remains a beloved part of television history, and his tragic death remains a source of sadness for his fans and colleagues.
