English indie rock group Glass Animals was founded in Oxford in 2010. The band, which is founded and fronted by singer, composer, and producer Dave Bayley, also includes Joe Seaward, Ed Irwin-Singer, and Drew MacFarlane, three of his boyhood pals. All three of the Glass Animals albums were written and produced by Bayley, the band leader.
“Heat Waves” is the group’s most popular single to date and was a surprise hit. Glass Animals became the first British act to top the chart since Mumford & Sons won the 2009 poll with “Little Lion Man” after receiving the most votes on the Australian Triple J Hottest 100 of 2020.
The song was later recognized as Australia’s #1 single for 2021 after spending seven weeks at the top of the ARIA Singles Chart. It debuted at No. 1 in March 2021, remained there through April 2021, and then reclaimed it in March 2022. It is the first song to ever spend 85 weeks or more in the top 10 of the Australian charts. The words on “Heat Waves” are there right away and don’t stop the entire song. Pitched-down voices chanting “I’m swimming in a mirror” flow directly into the chorus announcing the sorrows of being unintentionally kept awake thinking about a certain someone despite knowing better.
