In 2001, South African director Gray Hofmeyr released the comedy Mr. Bones. Actor Leon Schuster played the lead. In addition, he co-wrote the screenplay and developed the plot. The film uses racial stereotypes inversions for humor as it pits African “tradition” against forces of ambition and greed in modern South Africa.
Prior to being eclipsed by its sequel, Mr. Bones 2: Back from the Past (earning R35 million), which in turn was surpassed by Titanic in South Africa’s box office history, the movie had a domestic gross of R33 million, making it the highest-grossing South African movie of all time.

The 2008 South African comedy film Mr. Bones 2: Back from the Past, which was co-written by Gray Hofmeyr and Leon Schuster and starred Leon Schuster, Tongayi Chirisa, Leeanda Reddy, Kaseran Pillay, and Meren Reddy, was directed by Gray Hofmeyr. The title character in Mr. Bones 2: Back from the Past is the great, great grandpa of Mr. Bones from the previous movie, and the story is set in 1879. The dying Kunji Balanadin gives a gemstone to Hekule, the King of Kuvukiland, in this tale. The evil Kunji’s spirit, which Bones refers to as the “wild rider,” is cursed by the stone and takes possession of Hekule. Mr. Bones must go 130 years into the future to the city of Durban in order to heal his King and destroy this evil stone.
