They were both raised in subpar conditions with the sole purpose of producing ligers in a zoo in New England. Genetic flaws were present in the Zabu tigress, and the Cameroon lion may weigh up to 200 pounds.

Over time, Cameron developed a hazardous level of possessiveness over Zabu, making him a threat to zookeepers. Therefore, a choice had to be made on their behalf between sterilization and permanent separation from Zabu.
They came to the difficult decision that had to be taken.
Although he lost his gorgeous mane, it was a tiny price to pay to be with his true love. See their lovely photos together below.
