DJ Khaled  Early Life

Khaled was successful in getting a position at the New Orleans-based record shop Odyssey in the early 1990s.
Khaled said in an interview for the “Drink Champs” podcast that he would spin records at the Odyssey record shop, where Lil Wayne and Birdman both frequented. DJ Khaled was first able to establish a connection with the pair through this employment.

Khaled would DJ in reggae sound clashes after leaving Odyssey, fusing dancehall and hip-hop music.  Khaled relocated to Orlando, Florida in the middle of the 1990s after taking home $5,000 from a DJ competition.

He would shortly, however, serve a month in jail for repeatedly being found driving while his license was suspended. After being released from prison, he relocated from Orlando to Miami and began accepting DJ jobs everywhere he could. DJ Khaled began spinning records for a regular Friday-night show on the hip-hop radio station 99 Jamz in 1997.

Khaled would be able to begin establishing a following for his DJ career at 99 Jamz.  Khaled was granted his own show on 99 Jamz in 2003, and he remained there for a further ten years.

We the Best Music

Khaled quickly gained a passion for creating his own music, and in 2006, ‘We the Best Music Group’, Khaled’s own record label, was born.
By the time Khaled had put together his own record label, he’d already established great connections within the industry, and so he was able to get a lot of incredible artists to feature on his very first album, ‘Listennn… the album’.

They don’t want you to win. They don’t want you to have the No. 1 record in the country. They don’t want you to get healthy. They don’t want you to exercise. And they don’t want you to have that view.” – DJ Khaled
